Davie Senior Services

Senior Services started October with ways to stay fit.
Davie Senior Games participants headed to Winston-Salem to learn how to play mini-golf at Adventure Landing. Mini golf was added to the list of Senior Games activities in which to compete locally and state wide. Participants had such a great time that many of them stayed to play an additional game.
The bowling league is going strong. The SilverStrikers meet each Monday at Creekside Lanes in Winston-Salem. The teams are battling in friendly competition to win the coveted bowling trophy at the end of the season. The next bowling season will begin in January, and Senior Services invites all interested in bowling to keep a look out for more information coming up on the winter league.
Also in October, Senior Services brought back several fitness programs at the Senior Services Health & Wellness Center at the Brock Recreation Center. SilverHealth started back up with new instructor, Mike Orsillo. This class meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30 a.m. to work with hand weights and resistance bands, focusing on basic strength and flexibility, especially in the core muscles.
Following SilverHealth at 9 a.m., the Morning Wake Up Program offers 30 minutes of cardio movement. It is best to take these classes as a pair, but if you are just starting you are welcome to just do SilverHealth.
On Fridays, you may find yourself busting a move to the Electric Slide. This program is an addition to the weekly happenings at the Senior Services Brock Campus, and it is encouraged that all folks 55 and older plan to attend.
Line dancing is still going strong. This class is first come, first serve until the capacity is met. There are several daytime line dancing classes to choose from – Basic Steps, Level 1, and Level 2. Line dancing is offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. To participate on Zoom, the Wednesday morning class is broadcasted for those unable to attend in person. Instructors for line dancing include Vickie Spivey, Julie Cartner and Cathy Smith. Call for specific class times.
Another new addition at the Senior Services Brock Campus is Pickleball Open Play every Monday and Friday from 10-11:30 a.m. There are two courts available, and if you do not have your own equipment, you are able to check out paddles and balls. Pickleball has been described as a combination of ping pong, tennis, and badminton. If you want to learn Pickleball, plan to register for the Two Day Pickleball Clinic on Nov. 2 and 4 with instructor, John Bullins, from the USA Pickleball Association. This clinic will be full of tips and tricks on how to get started in a Pickleball journey.Clinic times are 10 a.m.-noon each day.
Yoga for Seniors started with a new session in October with instructor, Kim Crawford. This class fills quickly but there will be another chance to join next quarter coming up soon. The Wednesday Yoga class also offer a virtual option for those who are still uncomfortable coming in person. Yoga for Seniors is a gentle form of exercise that helps improve flexibility and relieve stress and is designed specifically for seniors.
Chair Yoga also began again for the first time since 2020. This class is modified for sitting in a chair, and contains all of the benefits of traditional yoga: increased balance and flexibility, reduced stress, and focused breathing. The class is taught by Harolene Atwood. This is another class that requires pre-registration, but there will be another opportunity to attend next quarter.
More opportunity for fun comes with the Davie Dazzlers Cheerleading Squad. The cheerleaders meet once a week on Mondays from 4-5 p.m. and are looking for more participants. They perform and have a great time each year. The Davie Dazzlers performed at this year’s 2021 Virtual State Finals for Senior Games. Next season, their dance and routine will be even better and stronger. The groups welcomes newcomers.
Another class is Tai Chi for Arthritis. This class focuses on using continuous, gentle movements to improve balance, increase muscular endurance and flexibility, and promote relaxation. This class is taught by instructor, Kelly Stellato, and meets twice a week. This class does require registration, so if you are interested, stay tuned for next quarter’s registration dates.
The Zumba classes always keep the seniors in movement. Zumba is inspired by Latin dance steps and will help you burn calories while increasing your heart rate.
