They call themselves “Team Parks.”
And at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, the young girls on the youth basketball team at Davie Recreation & Parks will be part of a ceremony honoring Marine Master Sgt. Phil Parks, who due to his service to his country, developed a rare form of Parkinson’s Disease called MSA.
He will be at the ceremony and the girls’ coach, Teresa Cookson, hopes to have a full gym as the retired Marine is surprised by the name picked by the girls.
“At the beginning of the season, I got together with the girls to discuss a team name,” Cookson said. “I wanted them to play not only for themselves, but to acknowledge someone in our military.”
She told them the story of Parks, her brother-in-law. “Without any hesitation, they chose ‘Team Parks’.”
The ceremony will be in the park’s main gym.
