Now SURF needs runners

SURF welcomes all runners or walkers.
Students Understanding Real Futures (SURF) is a youth-led organization in Davie County. The SURF Board is a youth philanthropy board, made up of 24 high school students who learn about the importance of giving back to their community. They define philanthropy as the 3 Ts – giving of their Time, Talent and Treasure. Since 2005, the board has raised money and awarded grants for youth-led projects in Davie.
In 2021, SURF awarded $4,030 to benefit three projects: purchasing wish list items for Family Promise, filling Easter baskets for students in need served by Hunger Fighters, and creating a youth centered area at The Park at Lake Louise. F
undraisers like the POPSICLE 5K make it possible for these young philanthropists to continue to support youth-led projects in the community.
In February, SURF hosts an annual fundraising event – the POPSICLE 5K, starting at Mocksville Elementary School, and traveling down Main Street to the Greenway in Rich Park. Runners are invited to eat a popsicle at the beginning, middle and end of the run.
There is also a “Brain Freeze” challenge after the run.
The POPSICLE 5K is known among runners for the soups and grilled cheese sandwiches provided after the usually cold run.
