Mrs. Doris Colleen Whitaker McDaniel, 90, of Oak Grove Church Road, Mocksville, died on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019.

She was born Aug. 18, 1929 to the late Oscar Roy and Essie Wall Whitaker in Mocksville, where she lived her entire life. Mrs. McDaniel found great pleasure in working hard, beginning at the age of 15 when she took a bus from Mocksville to Concord to work at Cannon Mills and then came home to help her father in the fields.She spent many years working at Hanes Hosiery and Crown Wood and after retirement, she went back to work part-time as a greeter at Wal-Mart. She was a lifelong member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and an active member of the neighborhood watch in her Oak Grove community, always mindful of neighbors’ comings and goings. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her many laughs and much joy.

Mrs. McDaniel’s family is grateful to her niece and nephew-in-law, Peggy and Keith Dillon, and her buddy, Dixie Miller for the care and close watch they helped provide as her health declined but her desire to live her life out in her own home never wavered.

She was also preceded in death by: her husband, William H. McDaniel Jr.; a grandson, Philip Short; and siblings, Pauline Wall, Margie Whitaker, Oscar Gaither Whitaker, Gary Whitaker and Kenneth Whitaker.

Survivors: 2 daughters, Doris Short (Frank) and Vickie Neal; 2 granddaughters, Heather Froelich (Ryan) and Whitney Hamrick (Stephen); 3 great-grandsons, Parker, Aidan and Evan Froelich; a great-granddaughter, Nora Hamrick; 2 sisters, Shelby Mullis and Caroleen Speaks; a brother, James Whitaker; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 6-7 p.m. at Eaton Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held for family at 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Dean Allen officiating.
