Mr. Larry Lynn Gibb, 78, of Advance, died at sunset on Oct. 18, 2019 with his family by his side at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born on May 23, 1941, in Monmouth, Ill., to the late Jack Burrell and Irhmal Ruth (Brewer) Gibb. He was also preceded in death by: 4 brothers Paul, Gary, Jackie, and Danny Gibb; and brother-in-law, Dr. SC “Benny” Lindo.

He graduated from Biggsville High School in 1959, where he was class president, played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. He won the state title in the mile. He later attended Monmouth College where he played football.  He married his wife of 57 years, Linda, in 1962. He started his career managing a bowling alley in Burlington, Iowa and spent most of his career in retail with Montgomery Ward (36 years) in store and warehouse operations and store management.  He concluded his career as customer service manager of the Express Lube in Bermuda Run.  He resided in Biggsville Ill., Fremont Neb., Cedar Rapids Iowa, Columbia Mo., Newton, Iowa and Urbandale Iowa (25 years), before settling in Advance for the last 19 years.  He had many passions. His love of youth sports showed with his involvement in and president of the Urbandale IA Booster Club and Urbandale Little League. He was known in Davie County for the pride he took in his work managing the concession stand and selling ads for the Davie County High School Booster Club. He enjoyed golf, bowling, and reading, aiming to read 15 books in the first 15 weeks of the year. His favorite activity was spending time with his family watching his Illinois sports teams. His favorite teams were the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and the Fighting Illini. He loved watching his grandsons participate in sports. Nothing would keep him away from their games. In his final days, he attended his grandson’s football and baseball games as well as his great-grandson’s soccer game.

Survivors: his wife, Linda Gibb of Advance;  his children, Lisa (Scott) O’Brien of Advance and Troy Gibb of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Zac (Nikki) O’Brien of Advance, Nic (Ashlyn) O’Brien of Mocksville, Shane O’Brien of Advance; great-grandson, Wyatt O’Brien of Advance; sisters, Karen (Craig) Rima and Janet Lindo, and brother, Steve Gibb all of Biggsville, Ill.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at First Presbyterian Church 261 S. Main St., Mocksville. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Rev. Tom Nesbit officiating.
