Mr. Vernon David Thompson, 85, formerly of W. Church St., Mocksville, died Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Mocksville Senior Living.

He was born May 3, 1934 in Montgomery County to the late Sherril Lloyd and Frances Dortha Morton Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a member of First Baptist Church, Mocksville. He was a coach, teacher and principal for more than 30 years and had celebrated his retirement while at Cooleemee Elementary School. Mr. Thompson had served as Mocksville Town Commissioner and had been a recipient of the Mocksville Key to the City and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Reba Karen Andrews, and a great-granddaughter, Willow Pearl Beck.

Survivors: his wife, Lucy Mozelle Kuykendall Thompson of the home; 2 sons, Alex Thompson (Beth) and Randy Thompson (Christy), all of Mocksville; 2 siblings, Gayle Thompson of Mt. Gilead and Renea Diane Bennett of King; 5 grandchildren, Amber Goode (Jon), Wesley Thompson (Audrey), Hannah Beck (Andrew), Justin Thompson (Cellie) and Carly Thompson; and 5 great-grandchildren, Colton Beck, Kennedy Goode, Lincoln Beck, Presley Goode and Dixie Lynn Thompson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 2 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tiffany Seaford, Julius Suiter and Dwight Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the church.
