As about 700 spectators, contestants, and volunteers cheered for the 121 athletes competing in the Davie County Special Olympics’ 2019 Spring Games held on May 17 at the Davie County High School War Eagle Stadium, another less colorful event was taking place by the concession stand.

Stephen Grimaldi, Grand Knight of St. Francis Assisi Council 12610 of Mocksville, presented a check for $2,852 to Katie Brewer of Davie County Special Olympics.

The money is raised annually by the Knights’ LAMBS committee headed by Gene Dickey and supported by Tim Stewart.

Brewer said she was “particularly grateful” for the donation.

Special Olympians competed in track and field events and other specialties. They represented William R. Davie, Pinebrook Cooleemee, Shady Grove and Cornatzer elementary schools; William Ellis, North Davie and South Davie middle schools; Davie County  High School, RHA Group Home and New Horizons.

Several Knights joined volunteers from Davie High and the Special Olympics committee in serving nachos, pizza, soft drinks and bottled cold water to the hungry and thirsty Special Olympians.

Cadets of Davie County High School’s Junior ROTC formed a line across the field and  “policed” the area  cleaning up after the events. Col. Daniel E. Marks is senior Army instructor and 1st Sgt. Harold Wolfe is the Army instructor.
