Amendments, tax votes to fill ballot

With six state Constitutional Amendments, a local sales tax vote and another local fire tax district vote on the ballot, things can be confusing for local voters.

The 2018 General Election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6.  Each of the 14 county polling locations will be open 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. for persons eligible to cast their ballot.  Curbside voting will be available during these hours for persons able to travel to the polls, but unable to leave their vehicle.

Davie voters can cast ballots in federal, state, and local contests. The countywide ballot will also include six North Carolina Constitutional Amendments and a Davie County Local Sales and Use Tax.

The voters in the Advance fire district may vote (for) or (against) the Advance Rural Fire Protection District tax on Election Day only. That’s right, early voters will not be allowed to vote on that proposal. Davie elections director Tabatha Parrish said that state law says that absentee ballots shall not be permitted in fire district elections. Voters in the Advance Fire district who vote absentee by mail or during one stop absentee voting, may vote on the Advance Rural Fire Protection District tax at their assigned precinct on Election Day.  Those votes will be cast using a paper ballot.

The registration deadline for the Nov. 6 General Election for new voters will be Friday, Oct. 12.  Voters who did not meet the registration deadline, may register and vote the same day at any of the one-stop locations with proper proof of residency.   Registered voters who need to make address or name changes may do so at any of the One Stop voting sites while voting.

No excuse absentee ballots will be available for request through Tuesday, Oct. 30  except for sick or disabled voters who may request a ballot through Monday, Nov. 5. Requests may be made for ballots in person or by mail on a State Absentee Ballot Request Form signed by the voter, or by the voters near relative or verifiable legal guardian.  The form is available at http://www.daviecountync.gov/elections.

One Stop/No Excuse Early voting will be available Wednesday, Oct. 17-Friday, Nov. 3, weekdays 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 4from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.at the Davie County Board of Elections office, Bermuda Run Town Hall, and Jerusalem Volunteer Fire Department.

Questions may be directed to the Elections Office at 753-6072, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
