A total of 124 seniors, aged 50 or better, showed off their abilities and talents during the 24th annual Davie County Senior Games sponsored by Davie County Senior Services.

The 2017 local games consisted of 91 activities offered over 27 days during April and May.

Creative seniors showcased their work in heritage, visual, literary and performing arts. Athletic seniors displayed their physical abilities and skills in events such as swimming, archery, cornhole, horseshoes, pickleball and cycling, among many others.

The closing ceremony and SilverArts Follies held on May 25 was a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the participants. The work of all SilverArts participants was displayed and attendees voted for Terry Smith’s sculpture, “Drunken Red Ant” as the winner “Best in Show.”

Davie County’s newest cheerleading squad, the Davie Guys and Dolls, gave their first full performance.

Ms. Senior Davie County, Donna Harris, made the audience laugh with her comedy skit about her dog, Scrubs.

Davie Senior Services’ line dancing group, Boogie Brigade, wrapped up the evening’s entertainment.

For the first time, the “Spirit of Senior Games” Award was introduced and awarded. Jessica Pollard, local coordinator, explained that she had seen many individuals exhibiting great sportsmanship, inspiring others to try new events, and participating in many events just because they still can. She wanted to recognize the positive influence those individuals had on others.

The first annual “Spirit of Senior Games” award was presented to Alice Monk who participated in 17 events and often gave words of encouragement and tips on how to improve to other seniors. Pollard encouraged all participants to continue embodying the Spirit of Senior Games.

In total, 100 participants won medals during local games and are eligible to represent Davie County at the N.C. Senior Games State Finals in the fall.
