On Sunday, Nov. 27, Alice Anderson Barnette was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during worship service at Center United Methodist Church.
NC House Rep. Julia Howard made the presentation on behalf of the governor, bestowing on Barnette the state’s highest civilian honors.
After her retirement from many years at Mocksville Elementary School, Barnette has continued to volunteer her time and energy in many capacities including: Davie County Senior Center, local Senior Games, precinct official on election days, and in many leadership roles in her church where she has served as Lay Leader and on many boards. She is also a dedicated member of the Center Community Development Association and a worker at the Center Fair and barbecues.
Also in attendance that day were Nancy Tutterow (a 1992 recipient of the award who retired with 45 years of service in the Davie County Register of Deeds Office and was the first woman to run for elected office in the county), and Sandra Boyette, who received the award at Mocksville’s First United Methodist Church the previous Sunday. Boyette worked for many years with the Mocksville/Davie Parks & Recreation where she was coordinator for the local Senior Games each year. She also worked with the Davie Youth Council and found time to coach women’s tennis at Davie County High School for several years.
