At 4-0 in the Central Piedmont Conference, Davie’s football team is in great shape heading into Friday night’s game at Mt. Tabor at 7:30. Davie will be in greater-than-great shape if the War Eagles beat the Spartans.

The War Eagles (8-1 overall) are alone in first place. Tabor (8-2, 4-1 CPC) has a half-game lead over West Forsyth (3-1). If Davie wins, it will cement the top seed. If Davie loses to Tabor and beats Parkland, the War Eagles will tie for first but will not get the top seed as this is Tabor’s final regular-season game.

This is a blockbuster game. Davie and Tabor shared the title in 2011, the last year either team enjoyed a CPC championship.  Tabor’s stadium will be a madhouse.

Tabor’s offense is built around running back Da’Quan Mason, who has 1,317 rushing yards.

“He’s phenomenal with the ball in his hands,” Davie interim head coach Tim Devericks said. “He’s very hard to bring down to the ground. He’s got good speed. (In the second half against Parkland) they would motion him out of the backfield and try to get him matched up with a linebacker and things of that nature.

“They’ve got a big wide receiver and a big tight end. We have to make sure we know where they’re at. They’ve got another shifty guy (senior D.J. Morgan) who plays running back and slot back. And their quarterback (junior Kedrick Patterson) is a great athlete as well.”

Davie and Tabor have four common opponents. Tabor beat Reagan 17-0; Davie beat Reagan 39-7. Tabor beat North Davidson 49-22; Davie beat North 45-42. Tabor beat Reynolds 26-14; Davie beat Reynolds 54-7. Tabor lost 33-27 to West Forsyth; Davie beat West 20-3.

“They’ve got a good defensive end,” Devericks said of Tabor’s defense. “They’ve got two safeties who like to fly around and hit people. They’re very aggressive and downhill. They’ve got corners who are big and tall – your prototypical corners. From watching them on film, they had a good mixture of pressures and playing base defense. I’m sure that will be in their package for us.”

Tabor leads the series 18-11, but Davie prevailed last year, 40-33, to end a three-game losing streak to the Spartans, who had won 13 of 15 before getting burned by Chris Reynolds. The Davie quarterback was utterly brilliant, going 25 of 28 for 250 yards, including a school-record 18 straight completions. Not only did he throw two TDs, he ran for two TDs while picking up 89 yards on the ground. Cooper Wall was gave Tabor fits with six catches for 103 yards.

Here’s a game-by-game look at Tabor’s 8-2 season:

• East Forsyth 22, Tabor 7 – Mason had two TD runs, but Patterson only threw for 57 yards as 27 of his 35 passes fell incomplete.

• Tabor 52, Winston-Salem Prep 6 – Patterson, who went 11 of 20 for 201 yards, threw 57- and 47-yard TDs to Teddy Christakos, and Christakos tossed a 7-yard TD to Blake Whiteheart. … Jashun Jackson scored on a 47-yard INT return.

• Tabor 42, Carver 6 – Tabor led 29-0 at halftime and held Carver to 64 yards. … Patterson went 12 of 17 for 237 yards.

• Tabor 57, Glenn 28 – Mason carried 22 times for 109 yards and five TDs as Tabor handed the Bobcats their first loss in four games. … Patterson went 10 of 18 for 149 yards.

• Tabor 52, North Forsyth 6 – Patterson threw two TDs and Mason ran for 190 yards as Tabor beat NF for the 10th straight year.

• Tabor 17, Reagan 0 – Mason’s 64-yard run and Patterson’s 12-yard pass to Jayland Moore staked Tabor to a 14-0 lead in the first 13 minutes. … In the first half, Tabor limited Reagan to 24 yards and one first down.

• Tabor 49, N. Davidson 22 – In the CPC opener, Tabor used long kickoff and punt returns and a blocked punt to set up TDs. … ND quarterback Joe Butts went 16 of 27 for 310 yards in a losing cause. … Patterson misfired on all four pass attempts, but Mason compensated with 17 carries for 167 yards.

• Tabor 26, Reynolds 14 – With Mason on the shelf in the first half with a sprained ankle, the Demons took a 14-9 halftime lead. But Mason ran for 84 yards in the second half as Tabor won going away. … Tabor coach Laymarr Marshall told the Winston-Salem Journal. “(Reynolds) pushed us to the limit, and we’re fortunate to get out of here with a win.”

• W. Forsyth 33, Tabor 27 – West scored 16 unanswered points in the final 4:30 to steal one after trailing 27-17. … Marshall told the Journal: “We’ve got a long way to go and we still control our destiny. We’re not discouraged.”

• Tabor 58, Parkland 12 – Tabor exploded in the second half after leading 15-12 at intermission. “When we get rolling, we’re pretty good,” Marshall told the Journal. “We’re just continuing to work on our consistency.” … Mason, the 5-8, 180-pound running back, had 21 carries for 157 yards. He also had three receptions for 70 yards. “I think he was the best safety in the league the previous two years, and we decided to put the ball in his hands this year,” Marshall told the Journal. “He is one of the best pure football players I’ve ever coached, and I really mean that in 16 years.” … Patterson was 10 of 21 for 231 yards, with TD passes of 33-plus yards to Moore, Whiteheart and Christakos. Morgan had a 21-yard TD run.

Notes: Davie cracked the AP Poll at No. 10. … Before the bye week, senior linebacker James Boyle moved to fourth in career tackles. The top six: Jared Barber (473 tackles from 2007-10), D.J. Rice (460 from 2002-04), Patrick Lowery (457 from 1999-01), Boyle (392 from 2013-16), Billy Riddle (381 from 2001-03) and Logan Buchanan (344 from 2003-05). … The NCHSAA announced that seedings and playoffs will be delayed one week due to the flood in the eastern part of the state from Hurricane Matthew. Now the first round will begin Nov. 18.
