Fish fry a success; old timers game Saturday

Another cool morning and warm afternoon greeted all who came to the annual RiverPark Fish Fry.

Bluegrass music was in the background while everyone extended hugs and greetings to new and old.  Many items were auctioned off silently with many happy winners.

Not only did a $10 plate get you three pieces of catfish, slaw, fries, hushpuppies, a drink and dessert but also you were able to admit that was the best catfish you ever ate.

If you missed out this year make a point to mark your calendars for next year.  The fish fry is always the third Saturday in October.

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1  p.m., the Ole Timers are getting together to bring back memories of how it used to be back in the day. All 55 years and older are playing softball as they have each and every year. October will bring cooler weather and give the players a more comfortable time.

If there aren’t enough women players for a game, we will combine the men and women to play against each other.  This really isn’t a competitive time, but one to have some fun, and prove they can still hit the ball.

At the end of the games a group picture will be made of all 55 years or more who played or who came to watch and used to play ball in Cooleemee.

Each one will receive a piece of the old green bleachers that everyone sat on to watch the games.

The bleacher stands were taken down a couple years ago because they didn’t meet code. Slices were cut and made into key chains so everyone could have a piece of history from years ago.

The Cooleemee Civitans will be selling hotdogs and drinks and don’t forget to bring lawn chairs.

To all those who played night after night at the Cooleemee ball field, we want to say thank you for the memories. Our town was known for good players and who knows, maybe in the future, we can get the ball field warmed up again for regular nights of ball again. Boy, wouldn’t that be fun.
