David Howard Swain Sr.

David Howard Swain Sr., 84, died Tuesday, Sept.  27, 2016.

He was born in Wilkes County on Dec. 23, 1931, the son of the late William Howard and Maie Jones Swain, and the widower of the late Iva Nelle Chaplin Swain. Mr. Swain graduated from Cooleemee High School with the class of 1950. He was employed by Western Electric and retired from McLean Trucking Co. Later in life, he worked for Primerica Financial Services. For more than 50 years, he was owner of David’s Kennel, providing boarding and breeding of Collies and Newfoundlands. He also served in the NC National Guard. He was a member of Cornatzer Baptist Church where he served on the finance committee and as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and trustee.

Surviving: his children, Melodie A. Heggie (Walter) of Phoenix, Md., and David H. Swain Jr. (Sherri) of Advance; 3 grandchildren, Joshua, Emily and Sarah Heggie; sisters-in-law, Inez Howard and Lavinia Chaplin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Starnes.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Cornatzer Baptist Church. The funeral service was held at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday, officiated by Pastor Clyde Ball. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Heggie, Joshua Heggie, Johnny Long, Willie Howard, Dale Chaplin and Dwayne Smith.
