Dalene M. Whitaker

Dalene M. Whitaker, 79, died at Gordon Hospice Home in Statesville Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016.
She was a native of Danville, Va., born Aug. 20, 1937, and the daughter of the late William Dallas Moore and Viola Nichols Moore. Although she worked a number of years with Erwin Mills (later Burlington), and then as bookkeeper for Mike’s Wrecker Service, she was primarily a homemaker for her family. She had attended Society Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She never met a dog or cat she didn’t love. She was a reader and self-educated in many ways. In later years, she enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching hummingbirds and listening to her favorite music on 98.1 radio.
Survivors: her husband of 61 years, Jay Whitaker; 2 sons, Larry Whitaker (Betsy) of Salisbury and Mike Whitaker (Ellen Hebert) of Mocksville; a daughter, Darlene Stutts (Jeff) of Statesville; a brother, Dallas Moore Jr. (Louise) of Mocksville; a sister, Kay Frances Talley of Clemmons; 2 grandchildren, J. Neil Stutts and Nicholas “Nick” Stutts, both of Statesville; plus many special nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Robertson; and 2 brothers, Danny Ray Moore and Kenneth T. Moore.
The family received friends Thursday at Davie Funeral Chapel. A celebration of life service was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. Burial followed in Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.
