Mr. George Washington Lawrence, 82, of Mocksville, died Friday, July 8, 2016, at his home with his family.

He was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Ashe County to the late Coy Hardin and Ellie Mae Main Lawrence.  Prior to his retirement from Dixie Furniture in Lexington, he made the samples of furniture that went to the furniture shows for 45 years. He was great at making the mock ups for the shows because he was a perfectionist by nature. He loved fishing, old cars and hardware stores. He always had a kind word for everyone. He was hospitable to visitors in the home and loved finding out where everyone he met lived. Earlier in life, he was a volunteer fireman with Cornatzer-Dulin Fire Department. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Cornatzer Baptist Church for many years. He brought his family up in a Christian home.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Mary Nell Carter Lawrence; an infant son; granddaughter, Beth Lawrence-Gosset; and brother, D.C. Lawrence.

Survivors: his wife of 32 years, Glenda Smith Nifong Lawrence; children, Angie Lawrence Lakey (Doug), Mark Lawrence (Kandy McEwen) and Donna Lawrence; grandchildren, Zachary Lawrence, Bailee and Mason Carter; great-grandsons, Noah and Parker Gossett of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, Clay Lawrence (Gay); sisters-in-law, Sue Lawrence, Shirley Cody, Betty Poole (Bill), Judy Ashley (Larry); stepson, Gene Nifong (Sharon); stepgrandchildren, Kathleen Shook (Franklin) of Hayesville and Timothy Nifong of Denver, Colo.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Kisa, Keely and Trace Shook; and their adopted family, Sandi, Ronnie and Samantha Prestwood and Heather Prestwood McEwen.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, July 11 at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Cornatzer Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at the funeral home.
