Talks about a change in compensation and more coverage in Bermuda Run by the Davie County Sheriff’s Department ended with the town bowing out of an agreement that provides extra coverage.
The town had been paying $22,000 a year to the sheriff’s department to have a deputy stationed in the town.
County Manager Mike Ruffin said the agreement was studied, and the 24-hour seven days a week coverage actually cost closer to $231,000. Bermuda Run town officials had discussed the issue several times over the past few weeks, he said.
As it now stands, the town will receive the same coverage as the rest of unincorporated areas of the county.
“They (deputies) will still serve Bermuda Run, but other areas as well,” Ruffin said. “Response times could be longer.”
Ruffin said the county will keep in touch with Bermuda Run officials to see if there is any interest in adding coverage prior to next year’s budget.
