Robbie ‘Bob’ Rhine

Robbie “Bob” Rhine, died Feb. 14, 2015 after 2 years of hospice care.

The son of Louisa and J.B. Rhine of Durham, he was the eldest of their 4 children.  He attended Durham public schools and graduated from Mocksville High School. He graduated from Duke University awith a degree in engineering. After serving in the Marine Corps in Korea, he mustered out a captain. He had a long career with General Motors, spending the last 20 years of his career abroad at their Antwerp, Belgium, and Mexico City facilities. He enjoyed his retirement in Florida and then Las Vegas, Nev. He continued to enjoy playing tennis, served on the board of The Rhine Research Center, and continued traveling and reading history.

Survivors: his wife of 67 years, Rose Holloman Rhine and son Robert Jr., of Las Vegas, daughter Rebecca Rhine, Oakland, Calif., and son Randall Rhine, Boston; sisters, Dr. Sally Rhine Feather of Durham, and Rosie Rhine, Portland, Ore.

His sister Elizabeth predeceased him. His parents, Dr. Louisa Rhine and Dr. J.B. Rhine were Duke faculty members for many years and then founded what is known as The Rhine Research Center in Durham.

A celebration and memorial will be held on Sept. 12 from 3-5 p.m. at The Rhine Research Center.
