Break-Ins increase in the spring

Warm weather can bring out the worst in people.

A rash of home break-ins in Davie County last week is proof of that.

Davie Sheriff’s Chief J.D. Hartman said it happens at this time almost every year – as soon as the weather begins to warm. Thieves go to work.

Most of the break-ins occur during the day, and jewelry, cash, guns and electronics are the most sought-after times. Yard equipment is also stolen from outbuildings.

“We have had a rash all over the county starting about mid-March,” Hartman said. “If you see something suspicious, call us. Get a description of the vehicle, the people, the license number if you can.”

It’s been said before: neighbors are the eyes and ears of law enforcement.

“Anything you can get could help us,” Hartman said.

Lock doors and leave vaulables out of sight. Do whatever you can to make your home look like someone is there. Most break-ins occur during the day because thieves do not want to be confronted, he said.
