Resolution OKd 5-2 – Two BOE Members Don’t Want To Force County ‘In A Box’

A resolution restating what Superintendent Dr. Darrin Hartness recently presented to county commissioners stalled for a vote after the school board members who  have not shown support for a new high school asked questions.
Steve Ridenhour and Paul Drechsler raised concerns about wording that said commissioners “have previously committed $5 million toward improvements to benefit Davie County’s high school students, which sum remains available to finance the construction of a new high school without an effect on the current tax rate…”
Ridenhour said his concern was that just because the financial commitment was made in the past, that there was no guarantee it would still be available.
Drechsler said: “I don’t want the board of commissioners to feel they’re being forced into a box. It almost feels assumptive or presumptuous. I don’t think we should assume what the commissioners could or should do.”
