A former Mocksville police officer was sentenced in Davie Superior Court last week on a charge of misdemeanor larceny, stemming from the theft of lottery tickets last year.
Keith L. Gunter, 46, along with his girlfriend, Lori Carter Correll, 40, both of Hillcrest Drive, Advance, were accused of stealing lottery tickets last September from the business where Correll worked, River Trail Mercantile, off US 64 East.
Assistant DA Greg Brown said surveillance camera video showed the pair taking a number of lottery tickets and scanning them with government computers to determine if the tickets were winners, prior to paying for them.
Gunter was charged with misdemeanor larceny for taking one ticket without paying and with felony obtaining property by false pretense for scanning the tickets. On the misdemeanor charge, he was sentenced to 30 days, suspended for one year unsupervised probation. He was ordered to pay court costs.
On the felony, he received a deferred prosecution, with one year probation. As a special term of that sentence, he surrendered his law enforcement certification, and Brown said the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission had already accepted that surrender.
