Davie Pounds All-State Pitcher

After giving up nine runs in four games, the Davie varsity baseball team’s pitching and defense sprung some leaks and surrendered a season-high 14 in Saturday’s nonconference game at East Rowan.
But Davie’s offense made up for it.
The War Eagles put on a dazzling display of offensive firepower and outlasted East 19-14 in a score that resembled football or men’s slowpitch softball.  
Davie jumped ahead right off the bat and never trailed. Its leads were 6-0, 6-3, 7-3, 7-4, 9-4, 9-7, 14-7, 14-13 and 19-13.
“It was a statistician nightmare,” Davie coach Mike Herndon said. “It felt like we were out there for five or six hours.”
Davie scored the most runs since a 19-5 win over Reynolds in 2006, spanning 127 games. For the record, Davie allowed the most runs in 19 games, dating to a 14-1 home loss to North Davidson in 2010.
It was not a work of art to baseball purists, but a win’s a win. What made it sweeter was Davie avenged a 5-3 loss in the first meeting, and it knocked off a perennial heavyweight in 3-A. East won the 2010 state crown …
