A Lexington man is in the hospital after being struck by a county-owned vehicle Tuesday afternoon on Depot Street in Downtown Mocksville.

Davie Sheriff J.D. Hartman said that little information is being released, as the investigation is continuing. The sheriff said results will be turned over to the district attorney’s office to see if charges are warranted.

Hartman said the victim was Wayne Lonnen, who told investigators he drives to nearby towns, walks around and prays for the town.

He was crossing Depot Street between the square and Clement Street at about 1:35 p.m. when he was struck, not at a crosswalk, Hartman said, adding that the county vehicle was not traveling very fast because it had just stopped at the square. It was driven by Howard Wishon.

The victim suffered broken ribs as he was hit by the front of the mini-van, and then his head hit the windshield. He was talking to investigators the next day from his hospital room.
