Participants attending Davie Senior Services events have had fun over the last few weeks.
Each Tuesday morning, the Senior Services quilting group works on quilting blocks, share ideas, and have a load of fun together.
On Tuesday, Jan. 25, Senior Services held its quarterly Veterans Social where veterans came together for a dessert and a presentation from CaptionCall. CaptionCall is a free service for individuals who have difficulty hearing. The phones through this program will take someone’s voice and type what they are saying so one can read along with the conversation as they talk on the telephone. This improves abilities for some to talk on the phone. There is also an option to connect the telephone to hearing aids. This program is federally funded and free to those who apply.
On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Senior Lunchbox activity was to make snowmen. They used Styrofoam balls, buttons, and ribbons to make cute snowmen to decorate for the winter holidays. Each week, the Senior Lunchbox holds activities such as bingo, cornhole, crafts, seminars, and more. If you are 60 , you may also participate in the lunch program for free.
On Friday, Jan. 28, Senior Services held its registration kickoff eent for the 29th Season of the Davie County Senior Games and SilverArts. This Senior Games and SilverArts season will be filled with more fun than ever with new activities and new event locations. The Senior Games team is looking forward to all of the excitement coming up this season and hopes anyone 50 or better that resides in Davie County will come out and participate. There will be plenty of activities and events to choose from such as golf, basketball, archery, softball, painting, writing, basket weaving, and so much more. On Friday afternoon, Davie County Public Library held its Crafternoon event, DIY Monogrammed Wine Glasses. In this session of Crafternoon, folks enjoyed painting a sticker of their choice on to the wine glass and then peeling the sticker off to have a design. Lots of laughs were had. The next Crafternoon will be held on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at the Davie County Public Library. The craft will be DIY Shadow Boxes and the class is limited to the first 10 people who register. On Thursday, Feb. 3, several folks came to the Brock Gym for the Ping Pong and Badminton workshop. Everyone was able to practice for Senior Games and enjoy learning the rules of each game. Senior Games activities are offered throughout the entire year so that you can learn rules, try something new, and have fun.
On Friday, Feb. 4, the morning started with Knitting Classes with Dr. Danny Cartner. The class is filled with tips, tricks, and more on the ins and outs of knitting. The class will learn how to knit a baby blanket.
On Friday afternoon, Senior Services had a crowd for Bingo and National Wear Red Day. The multipurpose room was filled with everyone dressed in red and the event was sponsored by Ellis and Newsome, PLLC.
The winner of the grand prize birdhouse was Joan Geter. Grand prizes are won by being the first person to have all of their numbers covered on their card. Bingo is so much fun. Coming up on St. Patrick’s Day, Roberts Chapel will be sponsoring St. Patrick’s Day Bingo. Be sure to register by calling 336-753-6230.
Upcoming events: Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. titled “Our Journeys, Our Songs, Part 2;” Grands Movie Day on Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m.; and the Legal Seminar with Hank Van Hoy on Thursday, March 10.
In addition to events, Senior Services is now taking appointments for their Tax Aide program, offering Coffee & Caregiving twice a month, and still needs volunteers to drive the Meals on Wheels Routes.
