The Davie JV girls basketball team’s lopsided win in the Central Piedmont Conference opener was a testament to Nadelie Jones, who delivered the most points by a Davie female JV player in 25 games, and a healed up Kaylee Lewis.
Jones had 18 as Davie shredded Reynolds 49-32 at home on Dec. 10. She banged three 3-pointers, made seven steals and blocked two shots in the biggest scoring effort since Cayla Hartsell had 20 in a 45-40 loss at Reagan in February of 2017.
It was the first game for Davie (3-1 overall) in nine days.
“Sometimes Nadelie gets a little help from Tasia (Tarpley) with a high screen or whoever I have in (that position),” coach Lamar Russell said after Jones posted 12 or more points for the fourth time in four tries.
The Demons were competitive in the first quarter, but they were roadkill by the end of the second. Jones, Callie Wisecarver, Tarpley and Kaylee Lynch fueled a massive 21-1 run that resulted in a 30-9 knockout at halftime.
After missing the first two games with an injury, after seeing limited minutes in the last game against South Iredell, Lewis hit her stride, scoring 10 points to go with seven rebounds and four steals.
“That was helpful,” Russell said. “Those 10 points were big because it could have been a close game without that.”
Wisecarver had eight points. Lynch, a rebounding machine, had seven points, 15 boards and two steals. Tarpley had three points. Hannah McMillian had two points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
“Tasia played one of her best games,” he said. “Although she only had three points, her defense was amazing. She can play the bottom or the top of the zone. Tonight it didn’t matter where I put her at, she was doing her job. She was boxing out. If she didn’t get the rebound, she boxed out so somebody else could get it.”
Jones is averaging 15 points. Wisecarver (8) and Lynch (7.5) are second and third in scoring.
