Although Davie rallied in the second half, it could not slow down the West Forsyth ground attack and lost 35-14 loss to the Titans on Friday night at War Eagle Stadium.
The Titans led 15-0 at halftime and pushed the margin to 21-0 early in the third quarter. That’s when Davie’s comeback began. On fourth-and-9, Alex Summers zipped a 20-yard touchdown pass to Zymere Hudson with 7:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Then Davie’s defense stepped up. Justin Hayes dropped the ball carrier 8 yards back on a jet sweep, John Stokes batted away a third-and-15 pass and Mason Shermer partially blocked a punt. Return man Za’Haree Maddox picked up the 26-yard punt at the last second and scooted 31 yards to the West 39.
Then Tate Carney went to work, churning for 7, 10, 20 and 9 yards. The 11-play drive, though, bogged down after Davie had first-and-goal at the 1, and Summers’ fourth-down pass from the West 7 fell incomplete.
But moments later, Peyton Helton made an enormous defensive play to revive Davie’s chances. Jevante Long fumbled and Helton scooped and scored with an 8-yard return. After Palmer Williams’ extra point, Davie was back in contention at 21-14 with 9:18 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Titans answered in a big way, covering 80 yards in only six plays. The TD was a 34-yard run by Mack David.
The War Eagles, down 28-14 with only 6:32 left, were in big trouble. They were down for the count after Don Robinson caught a deflection and took it 67 yards the other way for a pick-6.
Notes: The Titans held Davie to its fewest yards (216) in 28 games. … After losing two straight and three of four, West improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Central Piedmont Conference. … Davie, playing its second game in five days, fell to 5-3, 2-3. … Davie had won the past two meetings in thrilling fashion, 37-34 and 36-35 in overtime. … This was West’s largest win (21 points) over Davie in 24 yards (41-20 in 1997) and its largest win at War Eagle Stadium since 28-0 in 1990.
