Ellis’ football team did not have its second-year starting quarterback, Ethan Driver, but the Jaguars had plenty of firepower at Forbush Sept. 8, winning 28-8.

Driver was out with a broken finger in his throwing hand. “That’s a big loss,” assistant coach Mike Dinkins said. “He could be out two more games.”

The Jaguars leaned on Connor Dixson (three rushing touchdowns) and seventh grader Elijah Chaffin, who played five positions, including QB. The other four: linebacker, kicker, nose guard and running back.

Chaffin’s first pass attempt resulted in a beautiful 80-yard catch-and-run score by Dylan Miller, who caught the pass about 15 yards downfield and “broke a lot of tackles,” assistant coach Kendall Chaffin said.

Chaffin went to the air three times, completing two.

“He’s going to be a good athlete,” Dinkins said. “For his first time (at QB), he did a great job.”

J’siere Arnold, Cas Moore and Miller had big days for Ellis (2-0), which led 22-0 at halftime and enjoyed back-to-back wins for the first time since 2017.

Chaffin said: “J’siere played awesome on defense with a lot of tackles for loss. Cas played really good on defense as well.”

Dinkins: “Dylan played outstanding on defense. J’siere played extremely well on both sides of the ball (offensive line/defensive line).”

Notes: Ellis has an 8-2 series lead over Forbush. … North Davie and South Davie had byes last week.
