Alex Summers took his scorching hot game to yet another level, Tate Carney and Zymere Hudson scored three touchdowns apiece, and Davie’s varsity football team jumped on visiting Mooresville like gangbusters and won 51-34 Friday in the final nonconference game of the season.
While the Blue Devils fell to 1-2, the War Eagles, ranked 13th in the 4-A state by MaxPreps, are 3-0 for the third season in a row.
Davie’s high-flying offense put up pinball numbers even though it was missing three offensive starters, including big left tackle Spencer Williams, the receiving star from the previous week in Brodie Smith and running back/receiver Markel Summers.
A. Summers was unreal as Davie bolted to a 17-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, five seconds. He rolled up the most passing yards in program history with 430, breaking the record of 413 by Chris Reynolds, who did that in a 45-42 win over North Davidson in 2016. He also threw five TD passes, tying the Reynolds record from the same North Davidson game.
Receivers Hudson and Maddox took turns making spectacular plays. Maddox had nine catches for 105 yards, including a TD. (His night could have been even bigger but he had two long scores called back.) Hudson had eight grabs for 197 yards and three TDs.
How impressive was Hudson’s night? It tied him for fourth in single-game receiving yards. Maddox moved into a tie for fifth in career TD catches with 12.
With Smith out, somebody needed to step up. That turned out to be sophomore Evan York, who turned in three receptions for 46 yards while getting pulled up from the JV. Aidan Froelich had an impressive 34-yard catch to help Davie set the tone on the first series of the game.
And then there was Carney, who rushed for 185 yards, had a 48-yard TD catch and scored three times in all. He now has 66 career TDs, just one behind all-time leader Cooter Arnold. Carney climbed from fourth to third in career rushing yards with 3,582. And this was his 16th career 100-yard rushing game, good for a tie for third.
Summers’ season numbers are mind-boggling: 58 of 77 for 972 yards, with 11 TDs against zero interceptions.
It was a routine outing for Davie’s offense, which has racked up 149 points in three games.
