The Davie tennis season has been like a dream.

One week after Davie ended a four-match losing streak to Reynolds, the War Eagles earned another giddy victory against visiting Reagan on Aug. 30. They survived 5-4 to end a five-match losing streak to the Raiders.

Talk about boosting self-esteem. After back-to-back losing seasons, Davie improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Central Piedmont Conference.

“I could not be more proud of them,” coach Collin Ferebee said. “Reagan, like Reynolds, is always good. I knew their coach was going to have them ready to play, but my girls wanted to show them that Davie is different this year (after losing 7-2 and 6-3 to Reagan last spring).”

No. 2 Elliot Newsome cruised to a 4-0 record with a 6-4, 6-0 win. After No. 5 Whitney DeLoach faced a 5-2 deficit in the first set, she kicked into high gear and won 7-5, 6-0 to run her record to 3-0. Cat Rosser, who is 4-0 on the year, crushed her No. 6 opponent 6-2, 6-0. “I told Whitney: ‘This is all you. Flip that switch,’” Ferebee said. “She said OK and took care of business.”

No. 4 singles was a gut-check moment for Sarah West Marklin, who won the first set 6-3 but lost the second set 6-4. The tiebreaker was critical for both teams, and Marklin dominated that 10-4 to give Davie a 4-2 lead in singles.

“If Sarah West had not put us up 4-2, we would have lost,” he said. “So that was massive for her. She played the same girl last year and lost in a tiebreaker.”

Davie needed one of three doubles, and Newsome/Leslie Newsom sealed the deal, 8-4.

“We might not win all the time, but we’re not going down without a fight,” he said. “I was so impressed with how hard they fought. This is a match we would have lost last (spring). This year we dug deep. I was ectatic with them.”

Notes: Newsome and Newsom are 3-0 in doubles. … Reagan slipped to 1-1 in the CPC.
