One day after losing 5-1 at Summit, the Ellis girls soccer team got a heroic effort from Stella Frye and squeezed past North Davie 2-1 at North on March 23.

The Jaguars snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-4. It was their first win since a 5-2 decision over North on March 4.

“We played much stronger defense, with everyone working together and pushing the ball back up the field,” Ellis coach Leah Reynolds said.

Rachel Rodriguez gave North a 1-0 lead, but she was answered by Frye, who made it 1-1 at halftime. In the final 30 seconds, Frye struck again with her fourth goal of the season, tying Lylah McGowan for the team lead.

“The midfielders played all over the field to settle the ball and get it close to the North goal,” Reynolds said. “The forwards did a great job to try and finish each pass. Our goalie (AuBrie Pulaski) had great saves in both halves. The whole team did a great job communicating and working together to come out with a win.”

The Ellis-Summit game was 0-0 at the half, but the Jaguars ultimately ran out of defensive energy.

The goal was scored by Victoria McFarlin with an assist from McGowan.

“(Pulaski) had numerous saves and was really working hard in the goal to keep the score as low as possible,” Reynolds said.

The Wildcats lost 5-1 at home to Summit on March 24. Caroline Mitchell had the goal.

But despite playing a third game in three days, they staged an improbable rally and tied Wesleyan Christian Academy 4-4 in High Point on March 25.

North, which dropped the first meeting 4-1, trailed 4-0 at the half. It charged back, the first goal coming from Rodriguez, who has seven of her team’s 15 for the season. Then came goals from Mitchell, Brisa Bello and Julia Hines, who tied it with 15 minutes remaining.

The tie stopped an 0-10 slump for the Wildcats, who did not play a game in 2020 and were 0-6 in 2021. The losing streak dated to 2018-19.

“They surprised me,” coach Daniel Gamble said. “They were all scored in a 10-minute window. We almost got a fifth at the three-minute mark.”

South Davie fell twice, losing 6-2 at home to Wesleyan and 4-1 at Canterbury.

Cat Rosser and Jaden Carter had the goals against Wesleyan, with Sarah Andrade dishing out two assists.

Jaylene Rivera scored against Canterbury. The Tigers sank to 1-5.

“We played much better than we did when we lost 7-0 the first time against Canterbury,” coach Russell Hilton said.
