The Alexander Central JV boys were a one-loss team before Davie’s Jake Powers and Blake Walser delivered a 1-2 punch to the Cougar solar plexus.

When the first half ended, it was Powers 15, Central 10. The Davie duo scored as many points as Central’s entire team (37), meaning the War Eagles mounted a big lead before settling for a 46-37 home decision on Dec. 16.  Davie was missing five players with sickness (Luke McCormick, Eli Smith, Caleb Earnhardt, Max Junker and Ryan Walton). Even its coach, Ty Woodring, was under the weather and unable to make the game.

It didn’t matter because two guys overwhelmed the Cougars. Powers was electric in the first half. He nailed three 3-pointers in the first quarter to lift Davie to a 13-3 lead. He finished the first half with 15 points, and Davie’s lead was 26-10.

Walser dominated in the second half to finish with a game-high 20 points. Powers hit eight free throws to finish with 17, reaching double figures for the sixth time in as many tries. Powers (16.3 ppg) and Walser (12.8) have been 47-percent of Davie’s offense.

Bruce Wallace, who guided the JV to three winning seasons from 2014-15 through 2016-17, filled in for Woodring.

“I noticed this in the fall league, too. Jake doesn’t look like he’s (someone to watch out for),” Wallace, the varsity assistant coach, said. “His shot is a little funny looking and teams will play off of him. The first one he pulled from NBA range – they just weren’t guarding him – and it was nothing but net. He’s a good shooter. If he has a look at the rim, he’s one of the best shooters that’s come through here in a long time. That’s like the definition of a sniper right there.

“Blake ran the floor well. He didn’t get as many looks as he normally would get because they played that matchup zone. But he ran the floor. He’s just a beast on the JV level.”

What made the win more impressive is Central (5-2) came in with a four-game winning streak. “That explains why they were getting screamed at at halftime,” Wallace said.

JT Bumgarner had three points. Owen Byers, Hayden Williams and Andrew Shuler had two each.

“Burke (Rosenbaum) played good defense,” he said. “Owen played good at the point.”

Davie 56, Carson 18

In a road game on Dec. 19, Woodring handed the reins to Rosenbaum and Williams. They responded with season-high performances in a 38-point obliteration of the Cougars, who lost by 22-plus points for the fourth time in seven games.

Davie knocked out Carson (1-6) in the first half, 28-6. The margin continued to grow in the second half.

Rosenbaum (12 team-high points) and Williams (11) got starting nods and took full advantage.

“Burke had to handle the ball a lot (because of the combinations on the floor),” Woodring said. “They pressed fullcourt the entire game, so he had to do a lot. He handled it phenomenally.

“Hayden shot the ball real well. Burke, Hayden and Owen caused a lot of turnovers at the beginning of the game.”

Powers had 11, Walser eight, Shuler five and Byers three. Junker and Earnhardt had two apiece. Bumgarner and Ben Blankenship had one as Davie (7-1) extended its winning streak to seven.
