When the first half ended with the Davie JV basketball team holding a 25-23 lead over host North Iredell on Dec. 10, coach Ty Woodring was not happy. Six days earlier, Davie led the same North team 38-18 at the half and won by 31.

After receiving a stern talking at intermission, the War Eagles flipped the switch and won 54-40 as North fell to 2-6.

“We had to light a fire under their hind ends at halftime,” Woodring said. “The defensive intensity picked up. They went 10 minutes without scoring.”

After scoring three points in the first half, Jake Powers was lights out in the second. He scored 17 by hitting five of Davie’s nine field goals and finished with 20. This after scoring 21 in a win at Mooresville. He’s the first JV War Eagle to get 20 in back-to-back games in four years. (Coleman Sell had 20 and 23 in the fourth and fifth games of the 2015-16 season.)

“Jake got hot super quick,” Woodring said. “Most of the time he’s a wing, and he’s also like a stretch four.”

Blake Walser and Andrew Shuler had seven each. Owen Byers had six. Hayden Williams, JT Bumgarner, Luke McCormick and Burke Rosenbaum had three. Caleb Earnhardt had two.

Davie 56, W. Wilkes 40

In the season opener on Nov. 19, Davie lost 45-35 at West Wilkes. On that night, which overlapped football season, Woodring only had eight players – and all eight were making their JV debuts.

Revenge-minded Davie was better by some distance in the rematch at home on Dec. 11. Walser (12), Powers (11) and Byers (10) shared the wealth as Davie dealt West its first loss in six games.

“Walser got in foul trouble early, but he played really well,” Woodring said. “Powers provided what he usually does. I think Byers had his all-around best game. Defensively, he’s had several good games. But he shined offensively in this game. He’s a gnat on defense. He’s up in your face the whole time. He’s just all over you.”

McCormick and Ryan Walton had five each. Williams, Ben Blankenship and Earnhardt had three. Shuler and Bumgarner had two.

Davie 61, E. Rowan 38

Powers posted double figures for the fifth time in five games as Davie mashed East Rowan at home on Dec. 13.

Powers matched his team-high average with 16 points. Williams produced a season-high 10 as Davie improved to 5-1 with its fifth straight win. Byers and Shuler had six. Earnhardt and Walser had five. Walton and McCormick had four. Blankenship had three and Max Junker two.
