Even though four of the top five scorers from last year’s 9-3 team are now freshmen at Davie, the North Davie girls basketball team has not sagged.

The Wildcats of Trish King are 3-0.

They buried visiting High Point Christian Academy, 45-9, on Nov. 21. Tasia Tarpley and Nadelie Jones paced 10 scorers with 10 points each. Jaden Sink and Callie Wisecarver had five apiece. Kaylee Lynch had four and Gracie Spicer three. Hannah Meacham, Macy Davenport, Callie Jenkins and Lydia Lambeth had two.

After handing out thrashings by 19 and 36 points in the first two games, North pulled out a 34-33 home win over Central Davidson on Nov. 25.

The Wildcats kept their poise while facing a three-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Spicer hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining. Central missed and Jones was fouled while bringing the ball down the court.

It was a one-and-one situation for Jones, who nailed the first free throw to provide the 34-33 lead. She missed the second, but Central’s potential game-winning attempt was off the mark and North controlled the rebound. It moved the ball like a hot potato as the final 20 seconds melted off the clock.

Jones, who banged two triples in the fourth, led with 11 points. The clutch Spicer had eight. Lynch and Tarpley had four each. Jaden Sink had three, while Wisecarver and Jenkins had two each.

“They were twice our size,” King said. “I’m so proud of my team for playing big and hanging in there around such big girls. We had great hustle and determination. It was a total team effort.”

SD Wins

South Davie was missing two starters at High Point Christian Academy on Nov. 25 – sisters Kenadi and Makenzie Gentry. They combined to average 22 points through the first two games, including a massive 16-point clip from Makenzie.

And yet: The Tigers still had too much firepower in a 43-16 stomping. The margins were 10-0 and 21-3 after the first two quarters.

Barbara White (13 points) and Malayka Rankin (12) did the heavy lifting as South improved to 2-1. The other scorers were Sydney Phelps (seven), Emmy Johnson (five), Isabel Kittleson (two) and Mary Jordan (two).

“People had to step up and be in different roles/positions, and they did well with it,” coach Morgan Wyatt said.

Ellis Wins

In the Ellis opener at Tyro on Nov. 25, it seemed as though Marnic Lewis’ Jaguars were going to win comfortably. They held leads of 14-5 at halftime and 20-8 after the third.

But Tyro put Ellis’ feet to the fire in the fourth. All’s well that ends well, and Ellis held on 27-25.

Tyro exploded for 17 points in the fourth, but it did not get off a shot at the end to either tie or take the lead.

Tatum Tolar had eight points, Bailey Aderhold seven, Peyton Spaugh six, Kaylee Lewis four and Cora Nicholson two.
