On Oct. 19, the Charlotte 49ers football team was 2-5 overall and 0-3 in Conference USA with a four-game losing streak. Four come-from-behind wins later, Charlotte’s season has turned into something bright and shiny.

In a driving rain on Senior Day on Nov. 23, the 49ers faced a first-place Marshall team that was sporting a five-game winning streak. They trailed 10-0 at halftime. They didn’t crack, rallying for a 24-13 win.

Chris Reynolds, the redshirt sophomore quarterback from Mocksville, passed for 166 yards and rushed for a career-high 145 yards. With Charlotte nursing a 17-13 lead, it was fourth-and-10 from the Marshall 25. Reynolds cemented the greatest win in Charlotte history with a TD pass to Victor Tucker, who reeled it in as his helmet was ripped off.

Reynolds tossed a scoring pass for the seventh straight game. He rushed for 100-plus yards for the second time in three games. He overcame two interceptions by engineering two fourth-quarter TD drives.

The 49ers set a program record for wins (six) and reached bowl eligibility for the first time in school history.

Reynolds tweeted: “Niner Nation! Thank you for all you do and your constant support. Our defense was lights out tonight and did an unbelievable job. This one is for the seniors who poured their heart into this program and for the city of Charlotte. We’re not done yet!”

Reynolds (3,373) passed Hasaan Klugh (3,247) for second all-time in career passing yards.

Charlotte (7-5, 5-3) followed with its fifth straight win, 38-22 at Old Dominion on Saturday. Reynolds went 9 of 12 for 166 yards and two TD passes. He added 96 rushing yards on 11 attempts.

Cade Carney and Wake Forest outlasted visiting Duke, 39-27, in the rain on Senior Day on Nov. 23.

The Deacons (8-3) broke a two-game slide. Carney, a senior running back from Advance, punctuated the victory with two clutch runs. On third down, he bowled over a defender to moved the chains. Moments later, he scored on an 18-yard run to ice it with 3:27 remaining.

Carney tweeted: “Glory 2 God! Love my brothers and love Deacon Nation. Thank you BB&T for 4 years I will never forget.”
