Deep Roots Gardens

Well, it has been a long, hot, dry summer. But amazingly, the gardens have been producing well.

Some 2,275 pounds of fresh vegetables were given to worthy organizations this year, bring the six-year  total to 10,000 pounds.

Hats off to the Clement  gardeners  who have risen to the challenge this year and have given almost half of that number from their garden.  Our gardeners were extremely generous with their produce.

Jesse Ledbetter and his students have almost completed new fencing at the Storehouse for Jesus garden site. We have a new gate to install and electric wiring for the fencing and it will be ready to go. Thank you Jesse and students for a wonderful job well done.

Jarret Barnes, one of Jesse’s students, will be completing his Eagle Scout project in October with the installation of eight new raised beds at the storehouse garden. He is installing a new design of raised beds. Four of the beds will be connected into one long bed and will have divisions between it for separating the beds. This will prove to be a much more efficient raised bed design.  Thank you, Jarret.

Our tomatoes and peppers did well this year, but the most amazing crop has been the butternut squash.  We have had a bumper crop, and they are still producing.

We planted pumpkins in early June, just to lose most of them to heat. Then planted again in July never expecting anything of value, but a pie pumpkin that Beth Dixon purchased from Southern States is doing very well.  Who would have thought it?

Several Clement Street gardeners have planted a fall garden  that are doing well. We have  a second crop of tomatoes still producing. Please stop by sometime at either garden and take a look at what our community members and youth have done.

Our next Wednesday night supper is Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the family life center of First United Methodist Church of Mocksville. The menu is barbecue, baked beans, sweet potatoes, baked apples, and more.
