Touch-A-Truck was deemed a success as trucks and machines filled the Junker’s Mill area giving families of all ages and sizes a unique hands-on experience.

The event, hosted by Cognition of Davie County, featured vehicles such as a bucket truck, 18-wheeler, dragster, bomb squad truck, dump truck, construction equipment, and more.

His & Hers, Caleb and Sara Davis, performed music. Food trucks featuring tacos, barbecue, ice cream, cotton candy, and more were there, as was a balloon artist, sand station, miniature wrecking ball, and chalkboard car set the scene in the Fun Zone for a day of excitement for children.

“Touch-A-Truck brought family fun and child-like wonder to children, parents, and grandparents,” said Madison Hartness, Davie Community Foundation finance and communications officer. “Attendees of all ages experienced a unique chance to get up-close with many vehicles that we don’t get to interact with on a daily basis. This hands-on event served to financially support and endorse the opening of Cognition in early 2020.

Cognition is an interactive learning center and makerspace coming to downtown Mocksville. Upstairs will find exhibits built to equip the next generation with enthusiasm for STEAM concepts (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) . In the same way that Touch-A-Truck was hands-on, Cognition will offer young learners early opportunities to explore real-life STEAM situations and hands-on learning.

The downstairs will be devoted to the makerspace. This area will be available to visitors from ages 10 to 100, where they can tinker and problem-solve to their heart’s content. Classes, workshops, summer camps, and more will be offered to engage youth and adult learners. There will be opportunity for questioning, experimenting, and problem solving.

Mobile carts that have the flexibility to move around within the space will be dedicated to subject areas such as manufacturing, robotics, crafts, sewing, textiles and art. Each cart will be equipped with items pertaining to that cart’s subject area.

With a successful fundraiser complete, Cognition is gearing up to open in early 2020.
