Mrs. Hilda Cain Smith, 80, died on Sept. 14, 2019.

She was born on May 20, 1939 in Mocksville to the late Carl C. and Sarah Cain. She was a graduate of Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Winston-Salem. She worked for Novant Health Hospital (formerly Forsyth Memorial Hospital) and Davie County Hospital with a combined 45 years of service.

She was also preceded in death by: her husband, the Rev. Francis L. Smith; daughters, Priscilla Miller Cooper, Brenda Smith, Debra Smith and Gwendolyn Wellman; son, Thomas Smith; siblings, Clifton Cain, Evola Ellison, Millie West, Garfield Cain and Roland Cain.

She was a member of United Cornerstone Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. One of her passions was mission work. She was the former vice chair of the women’s auxiliary for the Woman’s Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of N.C.; former executive of the Rowan Women’s Auxiliary of the Rowan Baptist Assoc.; former board member of the Woman’s Baptist State Commission; committed supportive delegate to the General Baptist State Convention of N.C.;  former fourth vice president in the Forsyth County Missionary Union; president of the Missionary Department at Union Cornerstone Baptist Church; attended the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention for the Global Christian Missional Community; member of the Pilot Mount Baptist Assoc. and a host of other volunteer efforts local, state and national level.

Survivors: her daughters, Vanessa Miller of Winston-Salem, Cassandra Miller and Marisa Miller of Metro Atlanta, Ga.; son, Mike Smith (Velgene) of Danville, Va.; grandchildren, Patreesa Miller, Xarius Hampton, Shazzi McCullough, Jamien Smith, Demon Smith, Wesley Smith, Alisha Wellman, Thomas Smith Jr., Michael Smith, Michelle Smith; God-granddaughter, Jasmine Jefferson; great-grandsons, Kyson Coleman and Hendrixx Golden; 2 sisters, Lillie Mae Scott and Faye Carter (Richard); a brother, Wilbur Cain (Amelia); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The visitation family hour is at noon and the funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 916 East 12th St., Winston-Salem. The funeral services will be by the Rev. C. Anthony Jones. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Garden.
