A fourth Republican is seeking the office of Sheriff of Davie County.

Nelson Turrentine, 52, who retired last year as assistant chief of the Mocksville Police Department, filed on Friday.

“I can make a difference,” Turrentine said. “There needs to be more interaction and communication between the citizens of Davie County and the sheriff’s office.”

Turrentine started his law enforcement career with the sheriff’s department, spent a few years with the Reidsville Police Department and finished with Mocksville police. He has been a patrol officer, investigator and administrator.

He joins J.D. Hartman, Mark Howell and Mitch Whitener in the race for the Republican nomination.

Also last week, Robert Wisecarver joined fellow board member John Ferguson and political newcomer James Blakley as Republican candidates for the two seats on the Davie County Board of Commissioners.

Barbara Owens filed her intention to run for the Davie County Board of Education as an independent candidate. She will have to obtain the signatures of some 1,169 registered voters to be on the ballot. Three board of education seats will be elected this year, now held by Owens, Clint Junker and Chad Fuller.

Filing for local offices ends at noon on Feb. 28 at the Davie Board of Elections, 161 Poplar St. (back of Brock building).
