Deep Roots Community Garden is closed for this season, but in spite of the many spring storms, the summer droughts and the many little critters who have finally found the gardens, the year was successful, said spokesman, Diane Salmon.

The final total of food donated to charities this season is just over 2,600 pounds of produce. This brings the total for four years of operating to 5,990 pounds.

“We are just so very happy about it all,” she said. “We wish to thank all of our many supporters and this community for your constant help and support through every growing season. We wish to thank the Town of Mocksville for continuing to supply leaf mulch, the businesses who supplied wood chips, water and soil.

Jesse Ledbetter and the Davie County School system for helping at the Storehouse for Jesus garden site. Ledbetter and his group had planted about 12 raised beds with produce that was donated and even experimented with crops such as peanuts, cotton and popcorn.

“We are looking forward to a bright season with more cooking classes available and teaching classes at the gardens,” Salmon said.
