Students honored for good character

Each year, Davie Schools students are recognized for displaying good character.

The students selected to represent their schools exemplify the traits of compassion, courage, honesty, justice, loyalty, respect, responsibility and self-discipline. These students were recognized at the Character Education Awards Night held at the Brock Performing Arts Center in two ceremonies, one for the elementary students and another for the middle and high school students.

Jane McAllister, director of the Davie County Public Library as well as the president of the Humane Society of Davie County, was the speaker for the elementary schools and challenged the students to consider questions for building good character traits into their lives: What makes you happy?; When is it good to be stubborn?; and Why are please and thank you so important?

Austin Caviness, pastor for Salem Fork Christian Church in Dobson as well as a former WXII12 meteorologist, shared life lessons with the middle and high school students. He shared the “Character before Career” motto he had learned while attending the prep school, Stony Brook School, and encouraged students to count on the character that has been instilled in them.

The students were presented with certificates for their accomplishment.
