Davie’s wrestling team has a brawny lineup. Foard’s is even stronger.

The powers collided Saturday in the North Lincoln Duals. For the second year in a row, the War Eagles were 13-0 when they met the Foard Tigers. For the second year in a row, the Tigers handed Davie its first loss.

“We don’t know yet how to get up (for a big match),” a disappointed coach Buddy Lowery said following a 45-23 loss. “You can tell them all you want to … Hey, they’re good. You’ve got to wrestle hard when you wrestle good people.”

Two days earlier, the War Eagles stomped Reagan 75-3 on the road to improve to 2-0 in the Central Piedmont Conference.

Josh Shore, David Sigmon, Thad Vandiver, Hunter Strickland, Crayton Wise and Anthony Olmedo delivered pins. Isaiah Whitley won by injury default. Kyle McCune won a decision. Hunter Smith, Tommy Trader, Isaiah Olmedo, Jesse Carter and Jesus Olmedo received forfeits.

At North Lincoln, the War Eagles breezed past their first four opponents, winning 74-6 over West Rowan, 59-15 over North Lincoln, 72-10 over Freedom and 76-6 over Forestview.

The Davie-Foard match was the one everyone was waiting to see. Unfortunately for Davie, it brought a substandard performance, dropping 10 of 14 weight classes. The Tigers stopped Davie’s 24-match winning streak in the regular season. It was Davie’s first regular-season setback since 31-30 to Newton-Conover at last year’s Red Devil Duals.

Foard hit Davie hard early, a 24-0 run over five weight classes giving the Tigers a 27-6 lead. The only Davie win during that span was Smith’s pin at 113.

Davie’s other three wins: Wise pinned at 152, I. Olmedo had a technical fall at 182 and A. Olmedo pinned at 285.

The Tigers are really good again. They’re 16-1, with the only loss coming from an out-of-state team – North Forsyth (Ga.). They have taken four straight from Davie, winning 45-15 last year, 45-18 in 2013-14 and 36-33 in 2010-11.

“We’ve got the potential to be decent, but we did some little things wrong,” Lowery said. “Shoot, we got pinned too many times. We can’t get pinned (five times).”

For the day, Smith, Wise and I. Olmedo all went 5-0. Shore, Whitley, Will Allen, McCune and J. Olmedo went 4-1. Going 3-2 were Nolan Osborne and A. Olmedo. David Sigmon and Spencer Wilson were 2-0. Trader and Carter were 2-1.

I. Olmedo is still perfect on the season at 21-0. The other top records belong to Smith (21-1), Trader (18-6), McCune (18-6), Whitley (17-4), J. Olmedo (16-5), Shore (15-6), A. Olmedo (15-7), Wise (14-5), Allen (10-2), Carter (9-3) and Sigmon (9-3).

“(Jesus and Anthony Olmedo) are seeing their brother (Isaiah Olmedo) win this year at 182,” Lowery said of the 220 and 285 freshmen twins. “And they’re going to say: ‘How did he get there?’ He has worked.”
