Brianna Lyons and Kayla Moore are juniors at Davie High School. They are students in Terri Winchell’s dance class. And they’re Christians.

The two are among the dancers to be featured at the winter dance concert, “Listen To the Movement,” Dec. 10-11 at 7 nightly at the Brock Performing Arts Center in Mocksville.

Brianna and Kayla are choreographers for the dance, “Through Me.”

“It’s about giving up on things you are not proud of to God – and freeing yourself from it,” Brianna said. “Throughout the dance, you can see the relief, see the dancers struggling.”

Jordan Hein and Mary Ellen Lewis are choreographers for the dance, “The Colors Within.” The dancers hold canvas signs, integrating an element of art into the dance.

Jessica Boner, choreographer for “Flashbacks Into Truth,” has the dancers all wearing different costumes, not necessarily what is expected. “The whole point is about people who may tell you … judge you … decide to be friends with people who like you for you – not how you dress,” she said. “Some people feel like they need to dress up because someone else thinks they should.”

Lilli Butterfield had to choose two disciplines for her dance. She chose movements and psychology for  “Golden Gate.” The dance is a study in how depression affects movement. “It’s very slow. It’s also very personal and it’s very good to get it out,” the sophomore said.

Twins Karina and Karen Cisneros are choreographers for the dance, “My Mirror My Soul.” Karen said: “Around school, a lot of kids try to make people like them, this choreography is about letting that go and being yourself.”

Jessabel Obrero is choreographer for the lively dance, “Euphoria.” She said it is about school, mostly athletics.

Other dances in the concert: “Seasons” by Dance Composition students; “Music In Motion” by children in the Music-N-Motion class at Cornatzer Elementary, orchestrated by Davie High student Jordan Hein; “Storybook Ballet” choreographed by Winchell and the Dance Foundation class; “Cut” choreographed by Courtney Diaz; “A Time For Butterflies” by the Dance Foundation and Dance Progression classes; and a finale featuring music by Mariah Carey singing “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber.

The show should last just over an hour, with an intermission.

“Listen To The Movement is an original dance concert featuring student generated movement material from ballet to modern to interpretive to hip hop and jazz,” Winchell said. “You will see a variety of course levels from beginning to proficient.”

The students have been collaborating with the dance education department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
