EC student collecting books for pre-K

While doing community service hours at Central Davie Pre-K during her freshman year at Davie County Early College, Glamar Galeas saw an unfilled need that she wanted to do something about.

There weren’t enough books.

In order to encourage early childhood literacy, she gathered age-appropriate books and created a small lending library where students could borrow a book to bring home and read with their family.

This past summer, Galeas, now a senior, completed more than 80 service hours in support of the Pre-K summer program. While there, she noticed that many books in the library had been damaged in the past three years. Well-loved books often show signs of wear – particularly if they are paperback books whose target audience is still learning what they are, and how to use them.

Galeas intends to restock the Pre-K library in late November. To accomplish this, she has asked families to bring gently-used books suitable for children ages 2-5 to donation bins she has placed in the school foyer.

Is your family in a position to donate books in support of this project?  If so, feel free to come by the Early College during normal school hours. It is in the Gantt Building on Davidson County Community College’s Davie campus, across from Davie High.
