John Frank Garwood

Mr. John Frank Garwood of Garwood Road, Mocksville, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015 at Somerset Court of Mocksville.

He served in the Navy during World War II as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class. He was the oldest known living veteran in Davie County. He grew up during the Depression, but along with his grandfather and brother, James Garwood, worked hard. He continued to work hard for his wife, Hazel Coble Garwood, and children, Charles (Marsha) Garwood and Susan (Dave) Garwood Sidden. Family was important as he watched his grandchildren, John (Margaret) Garwood and Will Garwood grow up. Education was important he was a role model. He completed the College of Life Underwriters through Wake Forest University. Jesus was his best friend. He was a faithful member of Turrentine Baptist Church and a Third Degree Master Mason of Mocksville Masonic Lodge 134 for 50 years.

A funeral service was conducted at noon on Saturday, Aug. 29 at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Fred Carlton and Wayne Rentz officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy. Masonic graveside rites weree conducted by the Mocksville Masonic Lodge. The family received friends from 10:30 a.m.-noon.
