Cooleemee Women’s Civitan Club is having a spaghetti dinner on Friday, July 31 from 5-7 p.m. at the VFW Post 1119 on 7722 NC 801 S. Enjoy spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread, dessert and a drink for $7.  All funds raised support projects of the club.

The annual Duck Race and Tube Race was held at RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls, Bullhole on Saturday, July 18.

Even though the water levels were low and the heat was brutal, the bucket was full of yellow ducks when it tipped over.

A smooth trail of water was flanking the rocks on the east side of the river, which thrust them forward to the finish line.

With the levels being so low, there wasn’t much water coming over the dam but it was good to see some. The cracks in the mud banks were hard, crusty and deep.   

A woman had the right idea about how to stay cool. She was on a low rock that was on the west side, in the shade and her feet were in the cold water. She seemed to have the best seat.

Cold sno-cones were available, purple cotton candy and ice cold drinks. The smell of hotdogs filled the air.  -shirts were being sold beside amplifiers playing a mixed range of music.

Through social media, a family learned of the race and was excited to see it in action.  The mother said the park seemed to be a nice park to visit on a quiet day or a good place to read a book.  They would definitely return again, she said.    

Mike Garner is the event coordinator for the RiverPark board and he handed out the winnings to all designated winners.

Thanks to the Davie County EMS squad, everything was covered in case of an emergency.

The Cooleemee Fire Department was helpful with the Vacation Bible School for First Baptist Church.  The water slide was fun to the kids but they really enjoyed the large spray of water coming out of the big water hose. The bible school had a weeklong camping theme with 40-50 kids who enjoyed crafts, Bible stories, music and fellowship.
