Lula Mae Gough Smith

Lula Mae Gough Smith 88, of Mocksville, died on April 20, 2015.

She was born Dec. 4, 1926 in Davie County to Grady and Mary Riddle Gough. She was proud of her family and didn’t mind correcting with love and a switch. When neighbors and friends of the children came over, they lived under the same rules. She was a charter member of Green Meadows Baptist Church and was active in church as long as her health allowed.She loved Jesus and was dedicated to her Lord. She enjoyed playing the piano, singing, quilting, crocheting, needlework, working in her flowers and gardening. In addition to raising six children, she drove a school bus, worked at Monleigh Garment Co., received her CNA certificate, and cleaned houses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Kelly Smith Sr.; daughter, Arvesta McEwen; son-in-law, John David Jones; 1 grandchild; and 2 great grandchildren.

Survivors: her children, JK (Mary) Smith, Gerald Stephen Smith, Naaman (Sharon Coggins) Smith and Jesse McEwen, all of Mocksville, Julia Jones of Lilburn, Ga. and William Smith of Salisbury; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives, friends and church family.

She lie in-state at Green Meadows Baptist Church beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25.  The family received guests from 10-11 and the funeral service began at 11, with the burial following in the church cemetery; The Rev. Josh Greene officiated.
