Yes, Davie County is building a new high school at a cost of some $56 million.

But there are more capital needs in the county.

The courthouse needs renovations.

The E911 communications system has serious issues.

Other schools have construction needs.

The list goes on, and is ever changing. County commissioners will hold a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 to discuss a five-year capital plan.

County Manager Mike Ruffin said at Monday night’s commission meeting that these things – $60 million worth of improvements – can be accomplished without a tax increase.

“We’ll be very transparent … lay it out for people to see,” he said. “We have capital needs in our county other than sewer.”

Commissioners had already approved re-financing of 2006 Certificates of Participation that should save the county approximately $460,000.

“Amazing things are going on in our county,” Ruffin said. “We’ll see more of that. One of the reasons I decided to come here was the quality of the staff.”
