Lucy Foard Hubbard

Mrs. Lucy Foard Greene Hubbard of Winston-Salem died on the morning of May 21, 2014 at Arbor Acres, surrounded by those who loved her. 

She was the first of five children born to Dr. and Mrs. Garland V. Greene of Fork in Davie County, on May 25, 1923. Spending her childhood in that close-knit community, she graduated from Mocksville High School. Four years later, she graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University), where she was active in several education and teachers associations. After college, she taught school in Winston-Salem for one year. She worked for Southern Bell Telephone Co., traveling around North Carolina. In 1954, she and Warren Thomas Hubbard of Beckley, W.Va., an insurance executive, were married. His company transferred them from Charlotte to Winston-Salem, where their only child, Luellen, was born in 1956. She was active in activities and committees at their church, Reynolda Presbyterian. After her marriage, she renewed her teaching certificate and returned to teaching the fourth grade at Sherwood Forest Elementary School in Winston-Salem for the next 22 years. She shared her experiences from her travels around the US and Europe with her students, enriching the curriculum. In 1979, she was elected as Teacher of the Year by the faculty of Sherwood Forest. Always loving math, she was active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for years. n retirement, she continued her passion for teaching by tutoring students privately. She was a docent at Reynolda House for several years. She spent many hours knitting baby blankets and dish cloths for gifts while watching either the Atlanta Braves play baseball or the Duke Blue Devils play basketball. She maintained her membership at the Church of the Ascension in Fork and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. 

She was predeceased by her 2 brothers, Gene H. Greene and G.V. “Bob” Greene. 

Survivors: her daughter, Luellen Hubbard Lockwood (Thomas E. deceased) of Seattle; sisters, Edrie Greene Brunt of Winston-Salem and Carmen Greene Price of Maitland, Fla.; and 6 nieces and nephews and their families. 

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 183 Fork-Bixby Road, Advance.
