Catawba’s women shot 50 percent from the field and beat Tusculum 81-71 at Goodman Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Catawba (5-3) improved to 4-1 in the SAC. Catawba is tied for second with Wingate. Carson-Newman is 5-0.
Chloe Bully scored 17 points for the Indians. Mallary Clay had 13, Antionette McPhail had 12, and Zhaquondalee Greer scored 10.
Clay and Jelena Ciric had eight rebounds each. Bully had five assists in the SAC contest. Emma Ucinski made two of Catawba’s three 3-pointers.
Shynese Whitener and Nequoiah Anderson had 20 points each for the Pioneers (0-8, 0-5).
Catawba led 43-35 at halftime and was up by as many as 16 points in the second half. Catawba had a 15-2 run in the first half.

Lenoir-Rhyne overwhelmed West Chester (Pa.) 42-14 at Moretz Field on Saturday in a Division II semifinal contest.
A driving rain and temperatures in the 30s favored the ground-oriented Bears, who didn’t throw a single pass. L-R quarterback Josh Justice rushed for 175 yards and three TDs, and Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) had 90 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
West Chester is a throwing team and was hampered by the elements.
West Chester came into the game averaging 479.2 yards of offense and was held to 135 yards passing and 78 on the ground.
FARGO, N.D. — Sam Ojuri rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns as top-seeded North Dakota State crushed Coastal Carolina 48-14 in a FCS quarterfinal game Saturday.
Brock Jensen completed 14 of 21 passes for 187 yards and two TDs as the two-time defending FCS national champion Bison (13-0) won their 22nd straight game.
Jensen also ran for two TDs and 75 yards on 10 carries.

CHARLOTTE — Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 21 points and the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 88-85 for their first win since Bryant returned from a torn Achilles tendon four games ago.
Bryant was 8 of 15 from the field and hit two free throws with 37 seconds left in the game to put the Lakers ahead for good.
Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill had 15 points apiece for the Lakers and Nick Young had 13 points off the bench.
Kemba Walker had 24 points and eight assists for the slumping Bobcats, who have lost three straight games and five of their last seven.
The Lakers trailed most of the game, but cut the lead to 85-84 after Bryant drove the lane and scored a left-handed layup with 1:22 remaining.
Al Jefferson and Walker would both miss on the other end and Bryant went to work looking to take the lead.
He drew a foul on a jump shot with 37 seconds left and hit both free throws with some of the crowd chanting “M-V-P” while others booed

South Rowan swept a tri-meet with West Davidson and South Iredell on Friday at the J. Fred Corriher Jr. YMCA in China Grove.
The boys finished with 135 points, with South Iredell in second (90 points) and West Davidson in third (65 points).
Individual winners for the Raiders included Dustin Jenkins (200 free, 500 free), Steven Lyons (100 fly), and Stetson Johnston (200 IM, 100 back). The 200 medley relay team of Johnston, Nathan Shorter, Lyons and Reagan May finished first, as did the 400 freestyle relay of Johnston, May, Jenkins and Shorter. South gained two new regional qualifiers, with Jenkins qualifying in the 200 free and Lyons qualifying in the 100 fly.
• South’s girls avenged a loss last season to South Iredell, clipping the Vikings by six points, 126 to 120. West Davidson finished third with 41 points. Individual winners for the Raiders included Leslie Franks (200 IM, 100 breast) and Faith Casswell (100 fly, 100 back). Casswell, Franks, Casey Pruitt and Taylor Kluttz won the 200 medley relay, while Casswell, Samantha Kennerly, Sabrina Broadway and Pruitt won the 400 freestyle relay.
The Raiders return to action on Tuesday when they host Concord and Carson.
The Rockwell Christian varsity boys basketball team defeated the Bible Baptist Colts from Matthews 58-25.
Nathan Hoehman poured in 31 points to lead the Chargers.
• Rockwell’s jayvee boys beat Bible Baptist 26-24 as Austin Teodorvici tallied 14 points.
• The varsity boys lost 63-62 to first-place Tabernacle Monroe. Hoehman, who is averaging 22.3 points per game, had 29 points, while Titus Cruse and Micah Eagle had 11 each.

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls defeated North Hills 34-25. Julia Honeycutt led the Dolphins with 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Sara Nyugen added six points, Mary Sobataka and Mary McCullough contributed points. Olivia Dagenhart rebounded well.
• Sacred Heart’s varsity boys defeated North Hills 62-21. Michael Childress had 12 assists and six points. Jack Fisher had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Bill Fisher finished with a career-high of 10 points. Will Taylor scored nine. Eric Turnbull and Zach Robinette scored seven each. Spencer Blackwell added five points.
The varsity boys host High Point Home Educators Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Carson sophomore Zachary Marchinko finished second in the 3200 meters at the JDL Kickoff Indoor Track meet in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
His time of 9:55 was a school record and also qualified him to the Indoor State Track and Field Championships to be held in February.
Carson’s Garrett Ingold ran 5:02 in the 1600, and Hunter Kimball ran 5:14 in the 1600. Nick Cox ran 1:14 in the 500; Danyal Sherer ran 2:49 in the 1000 meters, Grant Doby ran 10:55 in the 3200 meters.
• Salisbury’s Jaleesa Smoot was fifth in the 300 in 42.25 seconds. Cheynne Gloster was ninth in the shot put with an effort of 31 feet, 71/4 inches.
Salisbury’s Max Patel ran 11:57 in the 3200. Matt Washko ran 5:10 in the 1600. David Derrick ran 6:01 in the 1600.
Omari Sanders long-jumped 16-1. Erik Murray ran 39.46 in the 300, Lamyron Green ran 39.55. Eric Gibson ran the 55 meter hurdles in 7.64. Desmon Millsapps (36-10) and Robbie Bergstone (28-93/4) competed in the shot put.
In the Carolinas PGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championships at North Myrtle Beach, S.C., South Rowan junior Davis Richards shot 34-35 — 69 and is in second place in the 15-16 division at 3-under.
East Rowan freshman Nick Lyerly shot 37-38 — 75 and is tied for 10th at 3-over..

Gerald Henderson missed a jumper for Charlotte, but Jefferson corralled the rebound and the Bobcats took a timeout to set up the last shot.
Jefferson backed down Pau Gasol but couldn’t convert a baby hook and the Gasol grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Gasol hit both free throws to push the lead to three with 6.2 seconds left.
Ben Gordon’s 3-pointer fell short as time expired.
Bryant came in averaging 11 points in his first three games.
He eclipsed that by halftime.
Bryant had 13 points, four assists and three rebounds in the first half as the Lakers staked to a 44-43 lead despite being outscored 28-12 in the paint. Bryant looked good from the start, scoring eight points in the first nine minutes, doing most of his damage with posting up his defender.
Bryant showed his touch when he banked in a 15-footer over Gerald Henderson and his range when he stepped out to knock down a 3-pointer from 26 feet.
But there were some struggles as well. Bryant air-balled a 3-pointer and threw a poor pass across court that was intercepted and led to a Bobcats layup.
“The thing that’s always made him different is his IQ,” said Bobcats coach Steve Clifford, who worked alongside Bryant last year as an assistant coach with the Lakers. “He’s playing and he’s a step ahead of everybody. Although he’s blessed with athleticism, his greatness has always been the mental part. People don’t see how he talks to his teammates about winning and playing better. You can even see it now. When I watch him play, that’s what I see.”
The highlight of the game came in the third quarter when Josh McRoberts cut down the lane, took a pass from Walker and skied over Pau Gasol for a one-handed slam dunk that brought the crowd to its feet.

HICKORY, N.C. – It was certainly not the result and definitely not the conditions with which West Chester wanted to end its football season.

The Golden Rams’ high-powered offense was slowed by a tough Lenoir-Rhyne defense and hampered by terrible weather conditions as the Bears won the NCAA Division II football national semifinal matchup, 42-14, at Moretz Stadium.

For more than three quarters, a driving rain and temperatures in the 30s wrecked havoc on the grassy field and all but eliminated any chance West Chester had to battle back from a 26-14 halftime deficit with its passing game.

West Chester came into the game averaging 479.2 yards of offense and 39.3 points per game. The Golden Rams were held to 135 yards passing and 78 on the ground Saturday and were shut out in the second half.
