There are 411 names on the Davie County Veterans’ Memorial on the square in Mocksville.  
These are military men who died in war times – from the Civil War up through the Beirut Bombing in 1983.
“Each man’s life, dedication, and death in the service of his country are special to each of us as we savor our freedom in our United States,” said Marie Roth, who is writing a book about each of the men.  “This memorial turned 25 years old in November of 2012, and was highlighted with a special gathering of Davie County people.  Each time we rush past this monument, we should say a ‘thank you’ to all these men. Memorial Day next week will honor them. There are many from the county who served and arrived back home safely, and we should say thanks to them also.”
The Civil War Roster of Davie County, North Carolina by sisters, Mary Alice M. Hasty and Hazel M. Winfree, has biographies of each of the 1,147 men who served in the Civil War.  Books are available from the authors. Davie County in World War One by Roth profiles each of the 670 men and three women who served in World War I. Her next book, Davie County Veterans’ Memorial, lists all these 411 men and includes the biographies of the men who died in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Beirut Bombing. These two books can be bought at Davie County Public Library.
