Davie’s football team reached the West Forsyth 2-yard line on the game’s first possession. In the second quarter, Davie started a possession at the West 4 thanks to a 79-yard kickoff return by Johnathan Wiseman.
What a shame that Davie came away with three points after those golden opportunities. What a shame that Wiseman’s spectacular return went for naught.
If the red zone starts at the opponent’s 20-yard line, the opponent’s 5 is the gotta-score-six zone. Those two flameouts were the turning points in a disappointing 13-10 loss to West Forsyth here Friday.
This was the start of a rigorous slate of games for the War Eagles, who fell to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Central Piedmont Conference. The Titans (4-3, 1-1) broke Davie’s five-game winning streak and ended their own two-game slide.
“We didn’t cash in early,” Davie coach Doug Illing said. “We had two opportunities inside the 10-yard line. If we score (touchdowns), they might fold the tents and – who knows – we might win by 20. We left them in the game, gave them hope and got in a dogfight.”
On Davie’s first series, it carved up West’s defense. Cade Carney’s 19-yard rumble set up first-and-goal at the 5. Then Carney made it second-and-goal at the 2. But Davie lost 4 yards over the next two plays and had to settle for a field goal. Garrett Nestor provided a 3-0 lead with a 28-yarder.
“We got three points out of it. But boy, when you get it down there that easy you’d like to punch it in and send a message,” Illing said. “It gave them life. We just didn’t execute down there …
